Trader Joe’s Almond Meal Muffins

I am a morning person. Always have been. Get up early and get lots of stuff done. Since I was a little kid, I have always woken up hungry. I don’t have that ravenous hunger that I had as a teenager, but I like a hearty breakfast. My usual go to meal is Trader Joe’s Free Range Eggs fried or scrambled with a piece of Trader Joe’s Cracked Wheat bread toasted with a cup of vanilla yogurt.

But I like my sweets in the morning for some reason. Maybe since I don’t drink coffee in the morning, I need a jolt of something to get me going some mornings. I think I might’ve found the thing to get me going! Trader Joe’s Almond Meal Muffins.

I picked up the four pack in the bakery section after looking them over. They look exactly like the carrot cake muffins! (Curse you Trader Joe’s for killing those off a few weeks ago and now I see why). When I got them home, I tasted one and they taste EXACTLY like the old carrot cake muffins, just more dense and moist.

If you look at the ingredient list, you would think they were shooting for a vegan muffin, but then you notice the eggs and butter. Which also takes them out of the vegetarian realm too. They could call them Gluten Free, but for some reason didn’t do that either.

Almond meal, eggs, zucchini, sweetened dried cranberries (cranberries, sugar), carrots, rolled oats, maple syrup, agave syrup, unsalted butter (pasteurized cream [milk], natural flavors), walnuts, chia seeds, vanilla extract (water, ethyl alcohol, vanilla bean extractives), ground cinnamon, natural flavors, baking soda, ground nutmeg, salt.

I’m not sure what they were shooting for here, but they are loaded with protein at 9 grams per serving. They do fill you up but they are also loaded with sugar. On the plus side, they taste very much like a good carrot cake with that same texture. You can see and taste the nuts and carrots. The cinnamon and nutmeg really come through. I really liked them and will probably buy them in the future. The weird thing is you can’t taste any almond flavor at all. Not sure if it’s masked by the spices they use to make these, but whatever they are, they are delicious.

  1. I dreaded the day, but it’s finally arrived. As with all TJ’s items, they’re dependant on the kindness of others to supply TJs with products. The vendor placed a hold on the muffins in my area (SF/Bay) and all stores are out. I has a BIG sad.

    • They have been discontinued down in Los Angeles too. BUMMER. I really really enjoyed these! One a day with my tea or coffee…
Trader Joe’s, if you are listening: bring back some sort of gluten free muffin please!

  2. They discontinued Morning Glory muffins and now have discontinued Almond meal muffins and refuse to connect customers with the bakers of these products. They just do not care about us and offer no compassionate help.
