If you’re anything like me, mornings are a mad dash of trying to remember if you put on matching socks while also trying to make something vaguely edible for breakfast. Enter Trader Joe’s new Breakfast Bowl: eggs, cheddar cheese, and chicken sausage all bundled up in one glorious, no-fuss package. It’s like they knew we needed a hug in a bowl, but with extra protein and a dash of “don’t worry, you’re doing great.” So, let’s dive fork-first into this culinary morning savior and see if it’s worth setting that alarm five minutes earlier for!
I really wanted to like this dish. I am always on the hunt for something different for breakfast other than yogurt or eggs and toast. Something quick and filling so when I saw this show up the other day, I had to pick it up and try it out. If you are like me and in a hurry trying to get out the door to work in the morning. Popping something in the microwave for a couple of minutes and filling me up would be a god send!
This is a pretty simple dish. Just scrambled eggs, chicken sausage and cheddar cheese. A Keto dieters delight! But the proof is in the pudding as they say and chicken sausage might be the Achilles heal…
So, Trader Joe’s only gives you one way to cook this frozen bowl. Which is $4.29 per bowl, thank you very much. You might be better off just scrambling a couple of eggs and buying some sausage and cooking it yourself and then putting some cheddar on it and freezing it and you could probably save over $3 for just this bowl, but I digress…
It actually looks quite appetizing before you cook it. You can see all the cheese and eggs and sausage in the frozen bowl. Pop a couple of holes in the ubiquitous clear plastic cover and in the microwave for three minutes. Stir and eat!
It actually smelled quite good coming out of the microwave and I was excited to try it because if you’ve eaten as many frozen eggs as I have (from taste testing food) you come to expect to be let down because factory made frozen scrambled eggs are near as good as fresh homemade ones.
I was not disappointed by my apprehension. The dish is not all that great. The best thing about it is all the melted cheese. It tasted like real cheddar cheese, which is the only win on this dish.
The eggs weren’t even the worst thing. The eggs weren’t half bad. I’ve had much worse frozen scrambled eggs from other companies. These were a little bland and spongey but overall I could live with them.
But it was the sausage that was the deal breaker. I really liked Trader Joe’s Chicken Breakfast Sausage patties. I thought they were some of the best chicken sausages I’ve ever had and always have a bag of them in the freezer for making breakfast sandwiches.
But these must be a different product. First, they had a weird texture. They were kind of spongy. Not like what I was expecting. Then the flavors were weird too. Not the subtle breakfast sausage flavors of the patties. They don’t have the texture of the patties at all. Then they are in these weird large chunks. It was pretty unappetizing.
Final Verdict
Sometimes I’m in a hurry and want a quick breakfast. My go-to breakfast is quick scrambled eggs and toast and fruit. But sometimes even that takes too much time and I just want to zap something in the microwave. On paper, this looks ideal, but with the high price of $4.29 per bowl and the weird sausage pieces, I probably won’t buy this ever again. I am rating it 5 out of 10 stars!
