Trader Joe’s Egg Bites Review

I don’t usually do this but I am going to combine two reviews into one. Double the trouble, double the fun!

If you have been living under a rock for the past couple of months, the egg bites craze has been sweeping the nation. It all started with Starbucks and their wildly popular Egg Bites which hordes of coffee drinkers snarfed down on their way to work. The next thing I started seeing them in Costco and I really like those too. They have a couple of different flavors and they are cheap. I think they are cheaper than Trader Joe’s and come in a Costco sized package of like 16 of them. But not everyone has a Costco membership or want to buy so many of them at one time.

Trader Joe’s is ever the food trend chaser and of course, jumped on the Egg Bite craze. They come in two flavors: Cheese, Spinach and Kale, Cheddar Cheese, and Uncured Bacon.

I’ll break down each one separately, let’s start with the Trader Joe’s Cheese Spinach and Kale made with egg whites.

With both of these egg bite products, you get two “bites” in a package and for the average person, two of them make a great meal. Lots of protein and is very filling. They are super simple to make. You pull off the top layer of plastic, the bites come in a paper tray. You just put this little tray in the microwave for 60 seconds and voila, piping hot egg bites ready to eat. Throw a couple of them in your bag for breakfast on the go or even lunch at work. The only thing missing is maybe a piece of toast and a grind of black pepper.

Visually, you can see that the Cheese, Spinach, and Kale egg bites are a bit paler than the Cheddar and Bacon ones. They also have green flecks in them, but that’s all good. The reason for this is that the Cheese, Spinach, and Kale egg bites are made with egg whites. Because of that, their fat and calorie content is much lower than the Cheddar and Bacon ones. It might have to do with the bacon too, but my feeling is that the Spinach and kale egg bites are supposed to be healthier for you, or so they want you to think.

Either way, after a quick microwave session, I pulled these out of the microwave and they were piping hot. I let them cool for a minute and applied a couple of grinds of pepper. Cutting into them you can see the kale and spinach in the middle. Eating them, I found that I really liked the flavor of them much more than I thought I would. They have a nice rich creamy texture but also you can taste the greens. The cheese was there in the background holding things together. But at 150 calories for two bites, I would need to supplement with some toast or something. I highly enjoyed them.

Next up is the Trader Joe’s Cheddar Cheese and Uncured Bacon Egg Bites

As with the previous ones, you pull these out of the plastic container and leave the bites in the paper cups. Sixty seconds later and you have two perfectly cooked Cheese and Bacon egg bites. Considering that eggs, bacon, and cheese are some of my favorite foods, it’s no wonder I liked this one slightly better. This one has a slightly yellower color and when biting into it, you can definitely taste more cheese and of course yummy bacon. These come in at almost double the calories of the egg white ones and at 240 calories, these are more my speed.

Either way, you can’t go wrong on these. Except for all the plastic packaging, which continues to plague Trader Joe’s and other grocery stores, these are a perfect way to have a quick meal and I think they are as good or better than the Costco and Starbucks versions. At $2.49, you will be saving a lot of money too!

  1. I first saw these egg bites advertised online and I thought to myself I have to buy these so I went shopping for my usual weekly items at Trader Joe’s and I found the egg bites and I brought both flavors and I wanted to love the egg bites but unfortunately I didn’t because I found them to taste way too salty both flavors
