I know I can hear all you pizza snobs saying “Oh no not another trendy, yuppie pizza from Trader Joe’s!” but yes we have another yuppified pizza from Trader Joe’s and it’s a good one! If you are a long-time reader of this blog, you know that I am a bit of a pizza aficionado myself. I make my own crust on a regular basis and I buy Trader Joe’s dough all the time when I need to make a quick pizza for the kids. I don’t normally buy frozen pizzas at Trader Joe’s anymore. I did when my kids were really small and it was a quick and easy meal for them. Unfortunately, I have myself to blame here, my kids like my homemade pizza so much they will not eat frozen pizza anymore!

I see this trend around me all the time. We want to be more upscale, so the name pizza is to the pedestrian for us so now it’s Flatbread. Don’t be fooled because this is all pizza!

Then there is the other trend that Trader Joe’s is foisting on us, the meatless fake meat trend. Do we need any more of it? There are so many good options for vegetarian pizzas why fake it? Vegetarians get enough protein from the cheese that the addition of meatless meat just seems forced.

Trader Joe’s Ancient Grain Pizza with Asparagus and Cherry Tomatoes. I have back to back Pizza reviews this week. First up is the newly released Ancient Grain Pizza with Asparagus and Cherry Tomatoes. This is a vegetarian pizza, but not vegan. (I really don’t know how vegans can live without cheese!) It’s another one of those pizzas from Italy which always seem to be a cut above the Red Barons and DiGiorno pizzas. I was a little skeptical of the claim of Ancient grains because they are clearly trying to go after the anti-wheat crowd too at the same time. I suspect that Pizza is one of the best sellers at Trader Joe’s and they are always looking at ways to up their game and bring you something new and different.

Trader Joe's Organic Pizza CrustsTrader Joe’s (Giotto’s) Organic Pizza Crust made in Italy. It’s early February 2014 and Trader Joe’s is undergoing another one of those purge old and restock new products. This is in conjunction with the new Fearless Flyer that they just pushed out and also with the new iPhone app. I am seeing a lot of new and interesting products so look for new reviews soon.

When I saw these new pizza crusts in the freezer section, I was dancing a little jig. I love it when Trader Joe’s gives us a new pizza product! I looked at the package and sure enough it’s from Italy so I was psyched to get it home and try it. There are two of them and I thought it was frozen dough that you had to let thaw out and bake. When I got it home and opened the bag they come in, I realized that they are “par baked” crust, ala Boboli. I remember when Boboli came out on the market years ago and I was smitten with them for a while. Finally I can make decent pizza without making my own dough. But the love affair was over fairly quickly when I realized that making my own dough was easy and much better.
