Trader Joe’s Piccolo (little) Pizza Review

Trader Joe’s makes a lot of pizza. From frozen pizza to fresh dough that you bake yourself to pre-baked crusts you just put toppings on. They got you covered if you want a pizza, which is a little surprising they released a new pizza. Trader Joe’s is always tinkering with their pizza lineup. Right now they are selling a ton of the Cauliflower crust Cheese Pizza I reviewed a couple of months back. With good reason, it’s one of the best gluten free pizzas I’ve ever eaten. This pizza is completely Organic and is a Product of Italy which makes me think it’s the same company in Italy making some of their other Organic pizzas.

This is a long rectangular pizza that easily fits in my toaster oven (and I’m sure most people’s toaster ovens). From the time that I turned on the oven to eating a pizza was about 20 minutes of mostly untended time. I did cheat and added a little Quattro Formaggio to the top of it since it looked a little sparse on the cheese and I’m glad I did. This could easily use more cheese and probably add a variety of things that you like like olives, pepperoni, ham or whatever you like. I wouldn’t go crazy with the toppings, it will just take it longer to bake. But this is a good base from which to make it your own.

I see where Trader Joe’s is going with this pizza. It’s a small one and I mentioned, fits in a toaster oven so you don’t need to heat up a big oven for this. It clocks in at 680 calories for a whole pizza which is a good amount of calories for a meal, especially for me as a guy. You could split it with someone with a bowl of soup and and a salad if you wanted. It cooked in about 10 minutes in my oven as you can see the cheese got nicely browned and the crust got, well crusty! I cut it into four slices and let it cool for a minute while I snapped the picture. It does make for a nice presentation. How does it taste? Pretty darn good! It makes a great lunch or dinner for someone on the run or just wants a simple pizza. The crust, while nothing all that great, does the job. It’s thicker than their round pizzas and has a nice chew to it. The sauce and tomatoes have great flavor and I’m happy I put extra cheese on it. I will be stocking up on these for my kids and me for a quick, no fuss meal.
