Fall is in the air and it time for Trader Joe’s to barrage us with pumpkin spice and apple cider flavored products. A couple of months ago I noticed that Trader Joe’s started to sell donuts. The first ones out that I saw were a old fashioned chocolate glazed donut, which my kids deemed meh. They were good enough but not super fresh. They came six to a box. I thought it was a genius move to start selling donuts. Trader Joe’s had plenty of sweet pastries, but I’ve never seen donuts before, which are a staple of the American diet.
Like I said, this is another product in the Fall onslaught. These donuts are the old fashioned type that have a cracked side on them. Old fashioned are denser and a thicker crumb than the new style donuts that are more airy. I actually prefer old fashioned ones more. I have since I was a little kid. Don’t know why, they just taste better in my opinion. The Trader Joe’s Apple Cider donuts are made with, you guessed it, apple cider. Then dusted with regular sugar and some cinnamon and nutmeg. You can taste a little of the sweet apple flavor from the cider, but otherwise, it more cinnamon and nutmeg.
As much as I liked these, donuts are best consumed within a few hours of making them. They get stale very quickly. I would love to taste these 5 minutes after they are made, but in Trader Joe’s
own website, they say they are made in cooperation with a family bakery in Western Massachusetts. If that’s the case, I’m in the Seattle area so that is a 2-3 day journey to my store? Somehow I think they are being made somewhere locally to this recipe specifications. Still, they are probably a day or two old before you get them. Not ideal. If you don’t care about how fresh your donuts are, pick up some of these. They are pretty good for what they are!
