Ah another wacky concoction by the crazy people at Trader Joe’s! First it was Cheddar mixed with Bacon. Then it was Spelt Risotto. Then We had Pita Chips with Cranberries and pumpkin seeds and that was just my last couple of reviews! This is why we love Trader Joe’s so much! You never know what wacky crap they are going to throw out there sometimes and it simply makes life more interesting!

I had seen this Trader Joe’s Beurre Meuniere Popcorn in the stores for a few months. I guess I got busy with things and kept forgetting to pick it up and try it. I am a popcorn fanatic and we make it for a snack just abuot every day. Trader Joe’s popcorn unpopped popcorn in the bag isn’t much to talk about. Orvilled Redenbacher’s is so much better! But I really do like the other popcorns that Trader Joe’s sells in the bag that’s been popped and seasoned. The Olive Oil popcorn is great as is the Movie Popcorn. The other one that’s got the herbed seasonings was just meh for me. Of course I had to try this one.

Beurre Meuniere PopcornLet me take a step back and try to describe what is going on here. I can see how they got the name Beurre Meuniere. Beurre = Butter and Meuniere = Miller (like to mill flour). But really, it’s usually applied in this way. Beurre Meuniere is usually a preparation of chicken or fish in which the meat is dredged in flour and then sauteed in butter, herbs, lemon, salt and pepper. It’s something I make all the time. It’s quick and easy and tastes good with a variety of side dishes.

Back to the popcorn. I guess you could infer that because they seasoned the popcorn with butter, salt, lemon and herbs you get some of the same flavors and you would be right! I really enjoyed this popcorn. It smells wonderful when you open the bag. You get a whiff of lemon and then some herbs and butter. I popped some in my mouth and started chewing. The one thing I like about this popped popcorn (as opposed to you popping it yourself) is that it’s always perfectly done and there never any unpopped kernels in the bottom and the seasoning is always evenly applied. What I really liked about the Beurre Meuniere Popcorn is the zesty lemony flavors that are balanced out by the salty herbiness. If you don’t like lemons, then this popcorn is not for you! I don’t get much of the butter flavors as they are overwhelmed by the lemon and herbs. You can feel the butter on your tongue as you eat the popcorn. A slight oiliness, but as expected when you put some butter on something like this.

All in all, I rather enjoyed this adult style popcorn (my kids hated it!). It would be nice to set out as a formal appetizer at a party or dinner. But at the same time you could eat a bowl of it watching a movie! Maybe a French movie to make it more authentic! I am going to give Trader Joe’s Beurre Meuniere 8 Bells!

  1. This one grows on you. The first portion that I ate, I said ecch. But after that I came to love it. It’s different enoigh from American expectations that it takes a couple of exposures I think. Good stuff.
