I want to keep this review quick and short because this product doesn’t deserve much attention. What we have here is a new product called Trader Joe’s Broccoli Fries, Crispy Crunchy Snacks.
These are essentially deep fried chunks of broccoli stems with some salt added. I’ve had other vegetable “fries” before from carrots to cauliflower to beets. First, they are never as good as potato chips or fries. Potatoes have a lot of good nutrients in them so I don’t know why all the hate for potatoes.
First, when I opened the bag, the broccoli fries smelled like baby farts. You know that smell when you leave cooked broccoli in the fridge for a couple of days? It’s sulfur compounds that are breaking down and just stink everything up. I let the bag air out for a couple of minutes and popped a couple of pieces of Trader Joe’s Broccoli Fries in my mouth and the same stinky taste. Yuck!. The fries had that green stem flavor of overcooked vegetables. I could barely choke down what I put in my mouth.
I didn’t throw the bag away and came back to it a couple of days later the stink had dissipated, but the herbaceous stemmy flavors were still there and now they were stale and not so crunchy.
This has got to be one of the worst products I have ever tried from Trader Joe’s. Just because you can make something doesn’t mean you should make a product. I predict this will be a one off product that we won’t see more of after a month or so. I don’t know what food testers at Trader Joe’s signed off on this but they should be checked into a mental institute because this was simply awful.
