Trader Joe’s Chicken Sausage Breakfast Burrito

I love breakfast. The more eggs and cheese I can eat, the better it is. I’ve always been that way. I’m not really a sweets person in the morning. This is one of those food items that I’ve seen on the refrigerated section for years and just walked past it not thinking about it. I go to Trader Joe’s so much that sometimes I have to force myself to slow down and stare at the shelves to see things in a different light because I pass by the same things over and over it all becomes a blur. Probably because it’s in nondescript package and light colored, I just walked on by day after day. Trader Joe’s Chicken Sausage Breakfast Burrito with Scrambled Eggs, Cheddar Cheese, potatoes in a flour tortilla.

For whatever reason, I am kind of glad I picked this up. Honestly, I don’t know why Trader Joe’s does this sometimes, they will randomly substitute pork for something like chicken and this is a good case. It’s probably to make it kosher-ish or something like that. I’m not sure, taste wise anyone could tell the difference. Just one of those odd things Trader Joe’s randomly does. I couldn’t tell by eating it if it was pork or chicken.

I would say the preferred method to make this would be to bake it in a toaster oven, but it was something like 30 minutes and if you are like me trying to get out the door in the morning, I don’t have that much time to worry about baking a damn breakfast burrito. So, I opted for the 2-3 minutes in the microwave. They tell you to unpack the burrito and lightly wrap it back up in the same packaging and microwave it on high for a couple of minutes. Mine was plenty hot and cooked through. Sometimes I worry this will be molten lava in the microwave and squirt molten hot cheese and burn my mouth like I’ve done so many times before. But, I went easy on the microwaving and let it sit a good long time (maybe 5 minutes) before I cut into it.

Unlike the crappy frozen Trader Joe’s Breakfast Burritos I reviewed years ago (and they no longer sell), these actually have some flavor (if not color). The interior of these burritos are a creamy concoction of cheese, eggs, sausage and potatoes. If it weren’t for the sausage, these would have no flavor at all. Of course, plenty of cheese makes them taste pretty good too! I enjoyed every bite and they are quite filling at around 400 calories so it was all I ate for breakfast that morning. Sure I could make these at home. But time is money and having to cook eggs, sausage and potatoes and combining them together would take way more time than I wanted to spend.

I always like to keep a couple of these around in case I am in a real rush in the morning. They aren’t spectacular, but not bad and fill you up! Dip them in salsa if you want some real flavor.
