Trader Joe’s Gold Potatoes

Trader Joe’s Gold Potatoes with Horseradish and Olive Oil Lightly Mashed (mostly chunks). You know one of our traditional Thanksgiving dishes is an old recipe that my mother dug up a long time ago. Mashed potatoes with horseradish and caramelized onions. I love horseradish in my potatoes, especially mashed potatoes. So when I saw this in the fridge section a few days ago, in conjunction with Thanksgiving, I just had to try it!

As I said, this is a refrigerator item, not frozen. It says right on the front that it’s Gold Potatoes, Horseradish and Olive Oil! Right up my alley. First I had to figure out what in the world were “Gold” potatoes? Yukon Gold? I love Yukon Gold potatoes, but this could any of the myriad of yellow fleshed potatoes that have come on the market in recent years. Nevertheless, I was looking forward to the creamy texture that Yukon Gold potatoes can have.

This is super easy to make, just warm up the oven and put the whole dish in there for about 20 minutes and then pull it out and let it cool down. It sure smelled good when it was baking and I could definitely smell the horseradish in the dish as it was baking. It smelled pretty darn good! Becky and I decided to serve this with some oven roasted chicken I made that night with a nice pan sauce.

I pulled the tray out of the oven and you have to be kind of careful here, those trays are made out of paper and it almost collapsed in on itself when I grabbed one corner. I actually had to find my pizza peel to pull it out! I then let it rest on the counter for about 5 minutes and then we dug into it.

I like kinda chunky mashed potatoes like everyone else, but these are chunks. I kept wanting to mash the potatoes up a little more. The chunks didn’t seem like they were as cooked as much as they could be. Maybe another five minutes in the oven? The horseradish flavors were definitely there and I appreciated them, but overall the potatoes and horseradish needed another dimension. Maybe cheese or onions or some type of herbs. It just didn’t taste like the flavors had been fully developed. Maybe it just needed some salt and pepper!

Anyway, I would only buy this if you are in a hurry. Things didn’t seem to be integrated and I think probably need more time baking. Besides it’s really not that hard to make a dish like this on your own and if you go the extra step, you can make something that’s quite a bit better. So, in a nutshell, only get it if you are in a super hurry and even then it might require a bit of doctoring!

I am going to rate Trader Joe’s Gold Potatoes with Horseradish and Olive Oil 6 Bells!
