Trader Joe’s Pita Crisps with Cranberries and Pumpkin Seeds, It’s pumpkin season again at Trader Joe’s! Every year Trader Joe’s (and many other food outlets) trot out a variety of different pumpkin infused products. Most of them have nothing to do with pumpkins, but are the melange of flavors associated with Pumpkin Pie flavors which are cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, etc. A little goes a long way and I think that many times those spices can overwhelm the flavors in a product. These Trader Joe’s Pita Crisps with Cranberries and Pumpkin Seeds are not one of those that really associated with those pumpkin flavors but do illicit flavors of Fall with cranberries and pumpkin seeds. This is new (as of the Fall of 2013) and are likely to be gone by Christmas time when the real onslaught of new foods comes in. I have to say I was surprised at how these tasted!
I really like pita chips as an alternative to potato chips that might kids tend to pick up. I doubt my kids would ever stick these in their mouths any time soon just based on the way they look, which to me looks really good. You can clearly see the cranberries and pumpkin seeds in them when you take them out of the bag. When I opened the bag it smelled faintly of roasted cranberries and bread. I kept thinking to myself, “what would these go with?”. First, I tasted one by itself and I was kind of shocked at the sweet/salty thing going on here and I expected them to be almost completely savory. But the cranberries really lend a slight bit of sweetness to the mix and the chips themselves aren’t as crisp as their other pita chips, but that was not a distraction in my mind. I could definitely taste the pumpkin seeds, but they are not the most assertive flavor so it’s pretty subtle. The cranberries to lend a bit of tartness, but that is also offset by their sweetness. So, you have this sweet/tart/salty thing going on in your mouth.
After I had eaten one chip by itself, I started to think about what I could eat these with? Of course, you could put out a selection of cheeses and that would probably work well with these chips. I also think hummus would work well. Then I thought of cream cheese. Not sure why but I grabbed my ever present container of Trader Joe’s Whipped Cream Cheese and dipped it in there and that combination really hit it for me!
So, by all means grab a couple of bags of these for your next Fall inspired party or even for Thanksgiving! People will think you went down to the local bakery and got their latest weird, but cool concoction and think how hip you are. I really like these chips and I will give these Trader Joe’s Pita Crisps with Cranberries and Pumpkin seeds 8 bells!
