Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Butter Review

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Butter

Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Butter: Cult Favorite or Sugar Bomb in Disguise?

Confession: I might actually be turning orange. At this point, I’ve eaten so many pumpkin-themed things from Trader Joe’s that my Fitbit should come with a PSL filter. And yet, here we are again—this time with Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Butter, the jarred spread that inspires a level of loyalty rivaled only by the Pumpkin Ice Cream.

I’ll be honest: I was a little nervous to review this one. TJ’s fans defend their seasonal favorites like it’s their firstborn child. But my job is to taste things and tell you the truth, so here goes.

First Impressions: Fall in a Jar

The jar itself screams autumn: deep orange label, rich dark butter peeking through the glass, basically daring you to pair it with plaid flannels and a hayride. I grew up eating apple butter (toast, pancakes, straight off a spoon—no regrets), so I expected something similar but with pumpkin pie spice vibes.

The First Taste Test

I cracked it open, inhaled, and yep—smells like pumpkin pie. One spoonful later and… whoa. Sugar bomb. The pumpkin and spices are there, but they’re buried under a tidal wave of sweetness. I checked the label, and sure enough: pumpkin, sugar, and honey are the top three ingredients. It tastes less like butter and more like eating honey out of the jar with a side of cinnamon.

Toast didn’t save it either. Still cloying. Still overwhelming.

What Trader Joe’s Suggests

Here’s where things get interesting. The side of the jar recommends using it as:

  • a pastry filling
  • a poultry glaze
  • an ice cream topping
  • or mixed with cream cheese for a spread

And suddenly, it made sense. This isn’t really a toast spread—it’s more of a fall ingredient hack. In cakes, pastries, or glazes? Probably amazing. Straight up on toast? Hard pass.

Final Verdict

On its own, I’d give it a 6/10. As a mix-in, glaze, or secret baking weapon, it jumps to a solid 8/10. Think of this less like peanut butter and more like pumpkin syrup in disguise.

So: cult favorite? Yes. Everyday toast topper? Nope. Use it where sweetness makes sense (desserts, glazes, baked goods), and it’ll earn its spot in your cart.
