Trader Joe’s Organic Cheese and Tomato Pizza Family Size Review – Trader Joe’s just keeps re-inventing their pizza line up and I think they probably hit on a winner this time. I was shopping after Christmas here near Seattle for something to bring to a football game party and my wife and I was wandering around the frozen section trying to figure out something easy to bring thank god I found this. It was the perfect thing to bring to a party or even just serve at home.

I grabbed one and put it in my cart. The box is quite large, almost the size of two square boxes put side by side so if you have a small freezer, it might not fit into your freezer space. Just keep that in mind when you pick it up.

This looks like almost a direct replacement for the Three Cheese Organic Pizza that was made in Italy that was supposedly “hand tossed” whatever that means. I doubt that little pizza elves were hand forming millions of pizzas for Trader Joe’s. I’m not sure how they defined “hand-tossed. This pizza, although it’s rectangular, is also “hand made”, which I find incredible since they probably make these by the millions. They are also baked in “wood fired ovens” which also stretches credibility.

Like their other pizzas that come from Italy, these come with a pretty thin crust. This one looks thinner than the round pizzas, but I think in this case that’s a good thing. They mention on the back of the box that you should use this pizza as a starting place for whatever you can think up and I think that’s a good idea, but for this review, I kept it simple and just added a little bit of mozzarella since the cheese looked a little sparse.

You are supposed to bake this pizza directly on the rack at 450F degrees for 12 to 14 minutes. A minute or two longer if you want it extra crispy and crunchy. I took mine out at about 13 minutes and it was pretty darn crunchy, especially around the edges. I didn’t take a picture of cutting it, but I cut it into squares on a grid pattern with my pizza wheel. Otherwise, the taste is pretty good. The sauce and cheese have a decent amount of flavor. I didn’t WOW me but I didn’t go “this sucks” either. It’s nice that everything is “Organic”.

I brought it out on a cutting board to my friends at the football party and they snarfed it up in short order. I’m glad I put the extra cheese on it. I could see putting pepperoni or sausage or olives or whatever you like on this. Obviously, the more you put on the longer it will take to bake this.

The original round cheese pizza was about 13.4oz in weight and this rectangular Family pizza is 17.8 oz so it adds about 4.4 ounces or about a 32% increase in size. The old round three cheese pizza couldn’t feed two hungry adults and this might. I plan on buying a couple for just that purpose!

HEATING INSTRUCTIONS: Conventional Oven: Heat from frozen. Preheat oven to 450°F. Remove all packaging. Place directly on center rack of oven. Heat for 12 to 15 minutes. For crispier crust bake an additional minute. Serving Suggestion: Try using this pizza as a base for your favorite pizza toppings. Just add desired ingredients and add 2 to 3 minutes to the bake time.

  1. Thank you for reviewing this pizza. I have been eyeing it since it came out. No employee could vouch for it. So I kept passing on it. Next time, I will pick it up. I am glad that I read your review and found this blog. Cheers.
