Trader Joe’s Spicy Pumpkin Samosas Review – If you have shopped at Trader Joe’s for any length of time, you will know they have an affection for Indian foods. This goes way back and has been part of Trader Joe’s allure for many years. That internationalism of it all. The feeling that you can walk into Trader Joe’s and pick up food from around the world that you can’t get anywhere else. This is less of the case than it was 10-20 years ago, but it’s still why many of us shop there. That and the prices can’t be beaten.

In true Trader Joe’s fashion, they have transformed a traditional Indian food item, Samosas, and put their wicked twist on it. Behold! Trader Joe’s mini spicy pumpkin spice Samosas! Now hold on a second. This isn’t as strange as you think it might be.

Pumpkin in samosas?!?! How dare they and pumpkin spice flavors? Well if you step back and think about it, those “pumpkin spice” flavors are very traditional in Indian cuisine. Pumpkin not so much, but it works well here. Considering that many traditional samosas are filled with potatoes, which originally came from South America, why not pumpkin which also comes from South America?

These mini samosas are about 2″ or so across. There are about 12 of them in a box. The recommended method of heating them up is in an oven for about 15 minutes at 400 degrees and that’s what I recommend. If you microwave them, they will just get mushy. The real oven gives you that golden crispy crust that traditional samosas have. These are basically filled with paneer, Indian cheese, little cubes of pumpkin, and of course some spices. They filled the kitchen with a wonderful smell coming out of my toaster oven.

I’ve burned my mouth too many times on these packets of molten lava so let them cool for quite a bit before you bite into one. Here I cut one in half and let it cool. The outside has a wonderful crispy golden crust. The filling has that pumpkin spice that you have been craving all year but it’s more savory and not so sweet, although there is a bit of sweetness from the pumpkins. They are somewhat spicy but not so much that it burns your mouth. I would easily put these out for a snack before dinner or at a dinner party for the holidays.

I am going to rate these 8 bells!

They are not vegan because of the paneer cheese in them.

You get twelve of these mini Samosas for $3.99.

  1. […] Probably the widest variety of Indian food is in the frozen section where they have many frozen dishes. I won’t call them meals because these should be part of a larger meal, but I know many people use them for lunch at work because they are so easy to put in the microwave and minutes later a flavorful meal. Personally, I wouldn’t want to eat just chicken and rice. I might pair this with my recently reviewed mini spicy pumpkin samosas. […]

  2. i was not a fan of these, although i love their potato ones and anything savory with pumpkin. Need more filling and the oily taste overpowered the filling. I had a stomach ache after eating b/c they were so greasy. I will toss the rest. To each their own, I guess.
