I’m always on the hunt for a quick and easy, yet nutritious lunch at Trader Joe’s. The freezer section turns over with new stuff constantly. I almost missed this one because it blended in with all the other bowls of pasta and Indian dishes they keep in the freezer, but I thought that would be a very interesting lunch. The extended tagline on the front of the box says “Juicy Chicken Thigh with seasoned rice Black Beans and Plantains in a zesty citrus and garlic sauce”.  Well, that all sounds pretty yummy to me! Sometimes I just think they throw something in a bowl and call it Asian or Mexican or Cuban or whatever and it vaguely has the flavors of wherever they are saying it’s from.

This couldn’t be simpler to make, just pierce the clear plastic top and stick it in the microwave for several minutes, let it rest, and start eating! Perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. Great for taking to work. It isn’t the most attractive looking dish in the world, but it was tasty and healthy. At 400 calories, it’s filling enough. You could add some avocados or cheese if you needed a few more calories, but this bowl has a lot of nice flavors. I will definitely be buying this again!

If you visit the Trader Joe’s website for this product, they repurposed it into tacos, which I think is a great idea!

Final Verdict

This is a product that I will buy over and over again. Super simple. It’s ver flavorful and of course easy to make. I’ll give it 7 Bells!

  1. I love all things from Trader Joe so was surprised to hit on the “Cuban citrus rice with plantain”. My bowl, The chicken was rubbery and there was Zero plantain and in hubby’s bowl it was lots of plantain and only one piece of rubbery watery chicken. This batch should not have passed quality control. Wont buy it again !
