Trader Joe’s Hold the Corn Appetizers Review. I have to admit when I saw this in the freezer at Trader Joe’s, I had no idea what this was supposed to be. I know it said “appetizer” on the cover of the box so I get that, but what did they mean by “Netted rice cones filled with a savory combination of sweet corn and vegetables”? I had no idea and I meant to find out!

Just judging from the picture, I thought this would be more of a Western style appetizer. It kind of looks like a mini horn of plenty or an over sized Bugles stuffed with some goodness. But when I turned the box over and inspected the ingredients (see the list below) and I saw Made in Thailand under the ingredients, I knew this was going to slant more to an Asian flavor and unlike the Bugles, which are based on corn, the “cone” on these is based on rice.

These are super simple to make. Just turn on your oven and heat them up in about 10 minutes. Just make sure they cool off before you serve them. These make a great appetizer at any of your holiday gatherings. The “cone” is a crisp wrapper that holds all the ingredients together. Just bite off a hunk and immediately you know this is a Thai creation. Slightly hot and the familiar flavors of chili and lemongrass mingle with the corn and mushrooms. I actually like the flavors quite a bit but it was a bit dry. I highly recommend making some sort of dipping sauce or buy Trader Joe’s Thai peanut sauce to serve alongside. Maybe even some soy sauce too. They need something extra to put them over the top. On top of that they are vegetarian/vegan so give them to your meatless friends.

I would easily put these out as an appetizer for an Asian themed dinner. Maybe if I was making some Thai curry or stir fry for a party or something. A couple of boxes of these would be a great substitute for dumplings or spring rolls, but are close enough to spring rolls that people wouldn’t miss them. I would buy these again without hesitation!
