There you go Trader Joe’s, you’ve done it again. Just when we thought we couldn’t possibly need another grab-and-go breakfast option, you hit us with the “Unexpected Cheddar and Turkey Sausage Egg Bites.” Because who doesn’t want to start their morning with a mouthful of confusion? Let’s dive in and see if this latest concoction is a game-changer or just another desperate attempt to stay relevant in the breakfast aisle.

For those that might need a refresher. Several years ago Starbucks introduced these egg bites to the public at their stores as a quick, but flavorful bite of food on the go in the morning. I remember eating them going I really love these, they are so easy. Then a couple of years later others started to copy them and package them to heat up in the microwave. Now, even Costco has a version they sell (of course in like a 20 pack) that seem to be very popular.

Not to be left out, Trader Joe’s introduced their own Egg Bites a couple of years ago and I reviewed them and really liked them. I said if you want a flavorful, filling and quick breakfast, you can’t go wrong. But what I wasn’t expecting Trader Joe’s to release another flavor. This time they are called “Egg White Bites with Unexpected Cheddar Cheese and Turkey Sausage”. Not sure why they went with just egg whites but some people like them. What I really wanted to taste was the Unexpected Cheddar and Turkey Sausage because I do like that flavor combo.

What you get in the package is two egg bites. They are 180 calories for both. The price is $3.49 for the two of them. They are super simple to make, just like the other two flavors. Take off the outer plastic and put the little paper cup holding the two bites into the microwave for 60 seconds and voila! instant breakfast.

If you are like me, 180 calories isn’t enough in the morning, so I usually make a couple of pieces of toast to go with them. Sometimes, I toast English Muffins and then stick one bite in between and squish to make a sandwich. Sometimes, I put a slices of cheddar cheese on the sandwich.

Could I save money and make my own, sure, but this isn’t about that. This is 100% about convenience. Because at $3.49 for these two bites isn’t a lot of money unless you are eating them every day. If it saves you the 10 minutes to put together a breakfast, then this is a perfect solution.

But let’s get to how they taste! but first, how to cook them. It’s really simple. Just take them out of the plastic wrapping, but leave them in the paper cup thingy and put them in the microwave for 60 seconds. One caveat, even with my fancy high powered microwave, 60 seconds isn’t enough to get them hot. 70-80 seconds works for me a bit better and then they come out piping hot.

These are a paler color than the other two flavors because of the egg whites. I could smell the sausage flavors when I took them out of the oven and cut into them. You can see the interior is an off white color.

It isn’t until you start eating them that you really taste the Unexpected Cheddar and sausage in the bites. The bites are soft and pillowy and slightly springy as you bite them. All I did was put a bit of salt and pepper on them and ate them with a fork and knife. You can see some of the sausage bits in the inside of the bite. There isn’t a lot but you definitely get the sausage flavor. The biggest flavor profile for these bites are the Unexpected Cheddar which is one of my favorite cheeses. I am so glad that Trader Joe’s put this in an egg bite product. I am not a big fan of just egg whites. I think the flavors get washed out without yolks but I know a lot of people like only egg whites.

Final Verdict

I love Trader Joe’s other Egg Bites and these are no exception. They are quick and easy and nutritious, albeit a little on the pricey side if you were to eat them regularly. The turkey sausage and Unexpected Cheddar work well, although I am not a huge fan of just egg whites, these work good enough in these bites. If you want a quick breakfast, don’t pass these up.

I am going to rate them 8 out of 10 Stars!
