Ladies and gentlemen, gather ’round for the latest culinary experiment from our favorite grocery store mad scientists: Trader Joe’s Gluten-Free Cheese Pizza with Cauliflower Crust! Yes, you heard that right – they’ve taken pizza, that holy grail of gluten-lovers everywhere, and decided to give it a veggie makeover. It’s like they’re trying to sneak vegetables onto our plates by disguising them as everyone’s favorite Friday night indulgence. But the real question is: Can this frozen, glutenless wonder satisfy our cheesy cravings, or will it leave us feeling flatter than its crust? Let’s dive in and find out if this pizza is a cauliflower-powered triumph or just another failed food fad.
Trader Joe’s has a long tradition with Glute Free products. I feel they have done more than any single grocery store to move the ball forward for gluten free foods. If you have a gluten problem, you must be happy with Trader Joe’s. Thankfully, I don’t have a problem but have had family members who did and it is not fun.
I want to point out that Trader Joe’s has had a Gluten Free Cauliflower crust cheese pizza in the past. I reviewed it way back in 2019 and I thought it was OK, but what the heck. If you wanted a gluten free cheese pizza at a cheap price, Trader Joe’s was like the only game in town. But reviewing the ingredients list on the back of the box, this is a total reformulation of the crust so, as you’ll see in the review below, it does change the character of the crust in a good way.
Let’s start out with the packaging and price. At $5.49 for a pizza, this isn’t a bad deal. Where are you going to find a decent frozen gluten free pizza at this price? Practically nowhere except at Trader Joe’s that’s where.
Making this pizza couldn’t be easier. Just warm up the oven to 425f and put it on a baking sheet when it’s frozen. I put some oregano on it because it looked like just cheese with very little herbage so I added some to give it more flavor.
That brings up a good point about this pizza. This is a plain Jane pizza. Crust, sauce, and cheese. That’s it. This is a blank slate. I would put whatever toppings on it, if you want to stay gluten-free, that should be easy with veggies or meats. Go crazy, but keep in mind the more you put on here, I would add more minutes to the cooking time.
From the top, this gluten free pizza is indistinguishable from a regular cheese pizza. Cheese and sauce and oregano. The aromas coming off the freshly baked pizza was the same as you would have from any normal pizza. Why not? other than the cauliflower in the crust, which has no flavors to speak of, this was just like any other pizza. They use both mozzarella and provolone on top. There is mozzarella in the crust I think as a binder to keep the cauliflower together.
After I pulled it out, it was a little tricky getting off the baking sheet onto a cutting board, but you don’t need to do that. The crust is thin and a bit crispy. You can tell there is no gluten because the crust has no structure like a floured crust but that didn’t take away my enjoyment of this pizza. The flavors are all there and if gluten free is your thing, you should really like this!
Final Thoughts
Overall, Trader Joe’s Frozen Cauliflower Gluten-Free Cheese Pizza gets a solid 8 out of 10 stars. The crust, while a bit on the softer side, still holds up well enough to satisfy. What really shines here is the perfect balance of cheese and sauce, creating a rich, flavorful bite that just needs a sprinkle of oregano and a dash of red pepper flakes to take it to the next level. For a quick, gluten-free pizza fix that doesn’t skimp on taste, this one definitely earns a spot in the freezer!
