If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to make a chile rellenos, but I don’t have the time to roast, stuff, batter, fry, or deal with the emotional aftermath of realizing my kitchen now smells like a deep fryer,” Trader Joe’s has heard your cries. Their new frozen Chiles Rellenos Con Queso promise all the gooey, crispy, cheesy, fire-roasted goodness of the original without requiring you to make a deal with your smoke detector. But does this shortcut deliver the magic of a freshly made chile relleno, or is it just a microwaveable mirage? Let’s find out.
What are Chile Rellenos?
I know that many people in close proximity to the Mexican border know what this dish is but many people in Minnesota and places like Massachusetts have no clue what Chile Rellenos are. Here is a quick description:
Chile rellenos, which translates to “stuffed peppers,” are a classic dish in Mexican cuisine with roots dating back to the Puebla region of Mexico. Traditionally, they consist of large, mild chili peppers, most commonly Poblano peppers, that are roasted to bring out their smoky flavor. Once roasted, the peppers are peeled, carefully slit open, and stuffed with a variety of fillings, most famously gooey, melty cheese, though shredded meat or beans are also popular. The stuffed peppers are then dipped in a fluffy egg batter, lightly fried until golden and crisp, and often served with a rich tomato-based sauce. This dish is a beloved staple of Mexican home cooking and street food, offering a harmonious blend of smoky, creamy, crispy, and savory elements in every bite.

What’s in the Box of Trader Joe’s Chile Rellenos?
Trader Joe’s gives us two chile rellenos and a packet of frozen tomato sauce for you to heat up and enjoy. Both of them in two bags in case you only want one. Unfortunately, the sauce is in one pouch so if you open it, you might want to save some of it for the 2nd one? I guess you’ll have to put it in another bag or something for later. Kind of a fail on Trader Joe’s part here. Two pouches. You do it for other products! One is not really a meal at 330 calories, at least not for me. Two of them are a meal, but if you want to stretch them, I would serve with a side of Trader Joe’s Spanish Rice.

How to cook Trader Joe’s Chiles Rellenos
Trader Joe’s offers us three ways to cook the, in the oven, air fryer and microwave. I think you can just forget about the microwave unless you want mush and soggy coating…
I choose my trusty air fryer for this task since I know it will give me a crispy coating to the Rellenos and I was not disappointed. I think the oven will work just fine too, it just takes like five times as long.
Now the sauce need to be heated up on it’s own too. Either method should work fine. The trick is getting it out of the bag. I had to cut it and then when it was frozen it wouldn’t come out so I laid it on the counter until it thawed a bit then squeezed it into a pot on the stovetop and gently heated it in a small pan.

Looking over the ingredients, the unfortunate thing is the Sodium content which is at 1740 mg for the whole box and that is 76% of your total daily allowance. Ouch that is salty! If you are watching salt, you might want to skip this one…
Tasting Thoughts and Rating
After cooking it in the air fryer and gently transferring it to a plate and pouring sauce around it and gently cutting it open to let the gooey cheese run out, I was quite impressed with what Trader Joe’s has done here. They have given us one of the most iconic Mexican dishes that is pretty hard to get right at home because of the deep frying involved, and frankly the mess and smell if you’ve ever tried to make it at home and pretty much nailed it.

Trader Joe’s knocked this out of the park. The exterior is crispy crunchy but in a gentle way, just like I’ve had at Mexican restaurants. You can clearly see the poblano pepper after I cut into the interior. The cheese was spot on. I thought this was wonderful and a good representation of what a decent Chile Rellenos should look like and taste.
Overall, Trader Joe’s Chiles Rellenos Con Queso earns a solid 8 out of 10 stars in my book, and let’s be honest, that’s basically Michelin star worthy in the frozen food world. The crispy coating paired with the gooey cheese and the smoky whole poblano pepper was a trifecta of flavor and texture that hit the spot. Plus, the air fryer convenience factor is a game-changer for anyone who values crispy perfection without the oily drama. The tomato sauce was fine, nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain to customer service about, either. My only gripe? The sauce packet situation. One sauce packet, two rellenos… it’s like a math problem I didn’t sign up for. But hey, as long as you have some salsa or guac handy for backup, these rellenos are a definite freezer MVP.
Hey, I loved this! Thanks for the review!
