This is on the top 28 items from Trader Joe’s in 2011, actually pretty high on the list if I remember. For good reason, this is simply delicious! I reviewed the Wasabi Seaweed Snack a couple of months ago and thought it was way too hot to eat straight out of the bag, but could be interesting as an ingredient in another dish. Wasabi overkill!
Because of the hype around this Seaweed Snack, I decided to pick up a bag. I expected something like the seaweed wrappers for sushi, but this is something completely different. I don’t know every nook and cranny of Japanese food, so I don’t know if this is common preparation for nori. (Roasted and eaten as a snack) Looking around the web, this might be a Korean preparation. This snack is presented as a stand alone item so I’ll review it that way. I’ve seen a ton of things on the web where people put in miso soup or use it to pick up rice and they all sound great!
I’m of two minds on this snack. As a stand alone snack, I really like it but don’t really get it. I opened up the bag and there is a lightweight plastic tray that holds all this sheets of seaweed so they don’t break. I was surprised how delicate they were! They crumble very easily. I took a bite out of one and it just fell apart in my mouth and almost melted on contact. I really enjoyed the crunchy, roasted texture of the seaweed and it had a nice saltiness that I like in a snack. I could eat a ton of these, they are very enjoyable!
Here is the part that I don’t get. The whole bag is 60 calories! I could eat a handful of peanuts and have 60 calories! The real secret to this must be something other than directly consuming, but I have a feeling that many people out there use them for a snack. That’s all fine and good, but it would hardly fill me up, but that’s just me!
How am I going to rate this? On one hand the flavors are great! On the other hand, I don’t get it as a snack because 60 calories doesn’t cut it for me!
(By the way, this looks exactly like Annie Chun’s Seaweed Snack which is widely distributed too)
I’m going to rate it 8 Bells! I’m marking it down a point because as a “snack” it needs to be a few more calories!
