Trader Joe’s Vanilla Overnight Oats Review

I didn’t have a clue what Overnight Oatmeal was and how popular it was until my wife started making this about a year ago. It’s dead simple, just add some yogurt or almond “milk” to oats and let it sit in the fridge overnight. The liquids soak into the oats and soften them up and make them soft, but not too mushy. Then the next day or two when you want to eat them, put some seeds, nuts or fruit into the mixture and eat!

Not to be left out of a trend, Trader Joe’s has release their own version of Gluten Free Overnight Vanilla Oatmeal. This product is dairy free. It’s vegan to boot! What’s not to like with this? I’ll get to that later.

Honestly, I don’t know why anyone would buy this unless they are in a huge rush. It’s dead simple to make at home and you’ll likely have better results. But having said that, there are times when you just want a quick snack or breakfast. This could be the base for adding fruit or other things to give it more calories and flavor.

I have had many overnight oatmeal made with real milk that my wife makes and I find them really filling and delicious.  I like it better with yogurt and some milk to make it a little more liquid. I like the tang of the yogurt. Put some blueberries and other fruit on top and it’s damn good.

Unfortunately, I didn’t like Trader Joe’s version very much. I had a feeling it was going to be this way before I even opened the package. First, this product is made days ahead of time so instead of overnight, it last weeks oatmeal. The oats just got too mushy and didn’t have the firmness of overnight. Secondly, the almond milk. Almond milk is sweet. There is no way around it. Add some vanilla and it’s just too sweet. There was a bit of cinnamon or something in there that made it slightly more interesting but I could only eat one bite. I know I am a bit of an oddity, but for my regular food like breakfast, lunch and dinner, I don’t like sweet stuff to be in my food. YMMV, so if you like sweet breakfast things, you may love this!

<Sorry I didn’t get the nutritional information. As soon as I find it I will put it up here>

  1. As you noted why would anyone buy this? A solution without a problem, a trash generator idea! Buy the oaty muesly, add yogurt and/or kefir, or milk overnight and ready in the morning. Disappointed in TD
