Trader Joe’s Pappa al Pomodoro soup

Trader Joe’s loves soup! They have a plethora of options from fresh soup in the fridge to canned and jarred soup to frozen soups. We are coming up on soup season soon and in perfect timing Trader Joe’s has dropped this amazing new soup on us in the Fall of 2019. It’s called Pappa al Pomodoro and the recipe originally comes from Tuscany in Italy. The name Pappa al Pomodoro literally translates into “Tomato Mush”, which is exactly what it looks like. It’s almost as simple to make as it is to heat up this frozen goodness. Essentially, it’s tomatoes and stale bread cooked together in a “mush”. But boy is it good!

Mrs. Club Trader Joe’s is a huge tomato soup fan. Her favorite meal growing up (and still is today) is a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. That’s her comfort zone. She really loves tomato soup. So, the other night, I picked this up from the freezer section. Each serving is 170 calories so it’s not a whole meal. I suppose you could eat both servings if you wanted as a meal. It might not be very filling but oh so good!

The soup comes in a box with two of these weird frozen cylinders shrink wrapped in plastic. It’s very simple to make. Just one or both of the cylinders of soup in a pot heated on a medium temperature until melted and then slightly bubbling. Take it off the heat and serve immediately. I would put a little bit of black pepper, Parmesan and maybe a drizzle of olive oil on top for a nice finish.

The soup is thick and light colored. It almost looks like it has milk in it, but that’s just from the bread. It is kind of like mush but not in a bad way. It’s thick and rich and very tomato-ey flavor. You can taste the onions and olive oil and there is a little heat from the chili peppers, which I love. So simple but elegant. I plan on buying more as soon as I can. I high recommend this one and if you like tomato soup, you will not be disappointed!

INGREDIENTS: CHOPPED ONIONS IN SAUCE (CHOPPED TOMATO, TOMATO PUREE), VEGETABLE BROTH (WATER, CARROT, ONION, GARLIC), SOURDOUGH BREAD (ENRICHED UNBLEACHED FLOUR [WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID], SEA SALT, MICROBIAL ENZYMES, CORN MEAL), EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, BASIL, SEA SALT, SUNFLOWER LECITHIN, CRUSHED RED CHILI PEPPERS.

    • Darn, we really liked that soup! I still have some in my freezer… I just rate Trader Joe’s products. I have no idea where you could find something similar. Sorry!

    • Very strange. I was at my NYC Trader Joe’s today and this soup was being offered at the sample station. I hadn’t been aware of it before, but it’s absolutely as good as this reviewer has written. I think it’s supposed to be one of their seasonal items, but even so, it’s still too early to remove it.

  2. This soup was hands-down even better than the Tuscan tomato soup I had all over Italy! As a vegan there is not many vegan options when in Italy. I was devastated to be informed by my Trader Joe’s store that it has been discontinued. I went on their website and filled out a form regarding discontinued items and letting them know my utter disappointment. Everyone else should do the same. There is nothing else like this soup. I discovered it one day in the store when they were doing a tasting. It was my favorite Trader Joe item. They said that if enough people complained it could be brought back.
