Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Rice review. I decided to jump on the band and see what all the fuss was about. This is Trader Joe’s newest hot thing right now. The bags of this ground-up Cauliflower are flying off the shelves! The internet is all a buzz about this magical ingredient. So I decided to dive in and make a recipe using it.
I love cauliflower, but there are usually two ways I make it. Cauliflower soup or roasted cauliflower “steaks”. I just cut up a head into wedges and toss it with a lot of olive oil and garlic and put it on a baking sheet and roast at 425f until just starting to brown on the edges. Makes a great side dish!
Anyway, I started to hear about this low-carb substitute for rice buzzing around, and a couple of weeks ago I saw at Trader Joe’s, not only Cauliflower Rice but also Broccoli Rice! For this review, I just stuck with the cauliflower version and might follow up with the broccoli version soon.
First, let me say that this is probably very easy to make at home if you have a Cuisinart-type blender. Simply put the cauliflower in the food processor and chop it up until it looks like rice. Pretty darn simple. Since cauliflower has a pretty mild flavor, you can kind of see how this might work as a substitute in some recipes. If you like plain rice on the side, you might just microwave the “rice” until cooked and then serve the way you want. But I wanted to do something more and I landed on making a fried “rice” dish for dinner. There seem to be about three things you can make with cauliflower “rice” and that is traditional style rice, fried rice, or pizza crust(?). I guess these are all meant for people on low-carb or paleo-type diets.
Let me say that I am a fried rice freak. I would eat it 3 meals a day, but I can’t get my wife to eat it because she doesn’t want all those “carbs”. So I am relegated to eating it when she’s not around or for lunch when I go out at work. But let me say this, my rice-avoiding wife really loved this recipe!
The recipe I used is from a website called Damn Delicious and is pretty close to what I normally make for fried rice, except I had some leftover chicken that I cubed up and tossed in there, but almost everything else was the same. I really liked it and seeing how easy cauliflower rice was to work with, I’ll definitely be making it again soon! The only minor quibble was the cauliflower took on a kind of pale grey color after sitting for a while but didn’t seem to affect the flavor.
I am going to rate Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Rice a solid 9 Bells!
